And yeah, Bravely Default is a pretty hefty time commitment. I forgot to mention that one issue with playing the game is that the last four chapters are a bit boring. There's some benefit to playing through them (extra asterisk-holder scenes, and the real final boss battle at the end is worth it), but it takes going through a LOT of fluff to get there. It's possible it might be better to skip all or most of the optional boss battles, depending on how leveled you are and how many jobs you prefer to have mastered and how completionist you are about story/games.
And yeah, the naming scheme and game release order they did for the Bravely Default games is wild -- it doesn't surprise me there is widespread confusion on what the relationship/order between the games is!
