I think you're spot on about the future of fandom. External and internal pressures are making fandom be both more visible and fighting for its niche and trying to get away from the people interested in exploiting it for selfish and commercial purposes. Small, low-bandwidth, text-heavy websites that link to each other sounds fantastic, and Dreamwidth is a great example of how it continues to work. Fandom is probably going to become less visible in the future and more small groups of fans together who stay small and don't interact much with other or bigger places.
