Help me decide what game to finish
So my "incomplete game playthrough" problem has gotten worse. One thing I discovered about myself this year is that I actually really like starting new games -- there's something comfy about playing a game you know nothing about, being introduced to a new world and new characters, being gradually eased into game mechanics, etc. So I think I sometimes just start new games because doing so cheers me up. BUT... I do want to finish off some of these games so that they don't take up brain space for me anymore and I can move on and don't have to worry about spoilers, etc.
I made a 2020 goal to finish games and it didn't exactly work, but maybe social pressure will help? Tell me what games you think I should play.
You can vote for any number of options. I'm only including games here that (1) I have never done a complete playthrough for, (2) I have a playthrough ongoing (so not counting games I've bought but never started like Golden Sun or Final Fantasy XV), and (3) I could possibly finish if I put my mind to it (so not counting Breath of the Wild, which I am very unlikely to be able to beat).
Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc: I think I'm near or just after the end of the first episode? I like the character dynamics but (1) I feel like I missed the boat on this one and nobody is talking about this game anymore?, and (2) I already watched the anime and so I already know how the story goes.
Final Fantasy I: I'm doing okay on this one. I restored the Earth Crystal and am going for Fire now. I started playing this one actually for research for an FF crossover fic that tries to mimic the general feel of FFI's story. So one benefit is that playing this doubles as canon research for my WIP.
Final Fantasy IV: My save file is possibly gone, but possibly recoverable from an external hard drive. I was in some underground place looking for dark crystals and Kain had just rejoined my party. But it may be the case I have to (or maybe should) restart from scratch.
Final Fantasy VI: I've gotten to the endgame of this game but have never actually fought the final boss/finished the game/collected all characters + finished their WoR sidequests. My current playthrough is on the GBA and I'm at the Sealed Cave / am nearing the end of WoB content.
Final Fantasy VII: I WAS playing this on my desktop (Disc 1 - left Midgar and was going after Sephiroth on the overland), but that computer broke on the trip over the ocean. So I would have to buy this one from a digital store (PS4 or Switch most likely) and start a new playthrough from scratch. But I DO want to play this one and see the rest of the story. This game is kind of intimidating me, though, because there's so much missable content and somewhat stressful minigames.
Final Fantasy: 4 Heroes of Light: Started playing this game on a whim as a way to relax. I've only put in one play session and just said good-bye to Krinjh. It is super cute and I love the guest characters so far. Plus, it's nice to see the elements that led to Bravely Default.
Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions: I've already finished FFT but am including this one since I've never finished this version, I haven't experienced the WotL-exclusive guest character or jobclass content yet, and I'm already getting a clearer understanding of the story from the better localization. I'm struggling with the difficulty, though -- am currently in Chapter 1 stuck on the Sand Rat Sietch mission and am remembering the reason why my Ramza was freaking 24 years old by the end of my last playthrough was because the only way I could advance was via insane grinding to give my characters more job experience under their belt.
Kingdom Hearts 3 and/or Melody of Memory: KH3 is basically done. I just need to clear the really hard DLC bosses. This option means finishing off those KH3 bosses for the purposes of starting/playing Melody of Memory. I feel like even people in KH fandom are pretty apathetic about MoM, though; I've basically seen no discussion or fanworks for it or its story. I played the MoM demo and it was really fun (it's made by the same team that made Theatrhythm, I think), but there don't seem to be any, like, social benefits to playing it.
Life Is Strange: Not sure where I am on this one. There's been a storm or something?? End of episode 3, maybe? I got a bit stressed out at the level of nonlinearity / feeling like there's a lot of decision points and I'm missing content by e.g. choosing to rewind or not rewind. But was told by people on the internet that the story is actually basically linear and your choices only affect small, unimportant things, so I actually don't need to stress about them.
Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch: I have no idea where I am on this one. I think I returned back to the real world, and I got a second party member. I like the graphics and gameplay but the story isn't really grabbing me. If I do this one, I may just start a new playthrough as it's been a while.
Octopath Traveler: I recently bought this because it's on sale (! until Jan 7th, I think). Have only put one play session in (did Olberic's opening). The story or gameplay isn't super grabbing me, but maybe it'll get better once I find more characters?
Persona 3: Uh... I'm not sure where I am in this one. I think I'm doing a male/Minato playthrough and I might have just met Aigis, maybe? I like the combo of life/dating sim and turn-based RPG gameplay, but I find the "are you using your free time maximally wisely and also completing these side missions on time before they expire" thing quite stressful.
Soulcalibur VI: I finished the Libra of Souls / big continuous story mode, and now would like to finish all the character-specific plots and generally play this game enough to unlock all the creation parts and museum content. Finishing this is probably simplest, but it's also the one with moving goalposts (i.e. periodically adds new characters and creation parts).
The Witness: I'm almost finished with this one. I've unlocked the last/central dungeon thing. I'm a bit nervous about this one because I've read people talking about the ending and saying how it's really unsatisfying? And there's also a timed bit coming up that people find really stressful, but even if you succeed, it doesn't make the ending any better? Sigh... I'm not sure how completionist to be about this one either, because there clearly are a lot of environment puzzles and secret videos I haven't unlocked yet, but IDK, maybe it's not worth it. Also, this game gives me bad motion sickness, so I can only play it for like 20-30 minutes at a time. I can definitely make progress like that, but it just has to be distributed over many days.
